The French language Center was established in 1984 in order to serve the purpose of teaching French at the University of Damascus . After that it has been included with the other centers to become one of the main division of the Language Institute. It provides :
Language Courses for candidates who get scholarships to study in France
Language Courses for the candidates for the masters degrees
Language Courses for doctoral degrees candidates
Language Courses for staff members at the university
Language Training Unit
This course has to be taken by all teacher’s assistants who get scholarship to study
In France, and who are interviewed by the French Committee that visit the Syrian universities in April each year.
These courses are held as per the Syrian-French Protocol organizing the scholarships
to France for acquiring the doctoral degree.
This course lasts for nine months and is held once every year.
Registration Conditions - Course Features - Documents and Certificates
Registration Conditions :
After the French Committee interview which estimates the level of the candidates And the training period they need at the center, the Ministry of Higher Education issues the scholarship decision to the effect that these candidates attend French courses at the center for nine months. The candidate is duly admitted at the center without any other document
Course Features :
The course is condensed , that is , 5 hours a day, and 5 days a week. Attendance should not be less than 75%.
At the end of the course , the learners take a comprehensive test which is prepared by the supervisors and teachers from the Syrian and French sides.
The results achieved should not be less than 50%; otherwise, the result is failure, and the course should be repeated next year.
In case the candidate wishes to change the center to any other university in Syria for
this course, an application to the Ministry of Higher Education to issue the decision
for this purport.
Documents and Certificates:
A registration document is issued to all admitted instructors which they can present to their faculties and to the Military Enlisting Offices.
When these instructors pass the examination, they will be granted a certificate signed by the Institute Director , after they prove that they do not owe the Institute library
any materials.
French language is considered the second European language after English , and it is spoken in the five continents : Europe, Canada, Southern America, Africa and Asia.
The French Language Training Unit provides French courses of different levels all the year round
Each course consists of 50 hours : 2 hours and half a day X 5 days a week. Thursday and Friday are off.
Each course has three levels ( 1 – 2 – 3 )

In addition to the adopted syllabus, the Unit uses supportive audio visual aids.
The unit holds special conversation courses for the elementary and advanced levels
The unit provides certificates at passing the final tests.
Registration starts 10 days before the course
When passing the final test of each level, students are transferred to the higher level. In case of failure , the student is entitled to repeat the level without taking the placement test.
A student may be absent for three courses , after which he/she can resume the study at the Unit without taking the placement test. If absence exceeds 3 courses, the student is considered a new one.
Placement test is a written test and an interview.
The result of the placement test could be kept for the next course.
